Historic Centre

Santu Lussurgiu is a small village located in the middle of Sardinia, not far from the west coast, on the largest volcanic massif of the island.

It is situated in the Montiferru region: a beautiful environment rich in springs and woods, in an excellent logistical position for getting to know the many fascinating aspects of Sardinia.
Historical sources attest that the first settlement of the village developed around 1,000 at the ancient Church of Santa Croce, linking itself to the cult of the martyr San Lussorio who still remains its venerated patron today. In the beautiful historic centre, the labyrinth of narrow streets of ancient cobblestones, overlooked by houses made entirely of lava stone, is evidence of its medieval origins and of a history that, later, reports the influence of the Aragonese (from 1409) and of the role of Bernardino da Feltre, founder of the Convent of the Observant Friars Minor, who built the exquisite Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (1474).

For those who want to feel history

Stroll through the village and observe the beautiful carved architraves of Catalan-Gothic influence, the archaic basalt containers ( sos lacchittos ) of the fountains from which the spring water flows. Pass below the unusual structures that connect the small houses in front ( bovedas) and note the imprint of the ridge made with cane on the arch. Then, use the succession of Carnival photographs scattered around the historic centre as a guide, you’ll see the story of a tradition that binds horse and rider to the local community in images.

Take a little more time and get to know the origin of the agro-pastoral and artisanal culture, and also the ancient history of the popular liturgical and paraliturgical polyvocality that make up the two important aspects of the tradition which you can still experience today.
